Novavax's monovalent avian influenza VLP (H5N1) vaccine is a recombinant virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine candidate designed to protect against the H5N1 strain of avian influenza. The vaccine is produced using Novavax's proprietary recombinant protein nanoparticle technology, where the hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and matrix 1 (M1) proteins of the A/Indonesia/05/05 (H5N1) virus are expressed in insect cells using a baculovirus expression system. These proteins self-assemble into VLPs that mimic the structure of the native virus but lack genetic material, making them non-infectious. The vaccine is formulated with Adjuvant 2 (a saponin-based adjuvant, later identified as Matrix-M) to enhance the immune response, particularly in dose-sparing contexts. Clinical evaluation has focused on safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults.
