Overview

Monovalent influenza modRNA vaccine (mIRV) is an investigational vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer that utilizes nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) technology. It is designed to encode the hemagglutinin protein of a single specific influenza strain, such as an Influenza A (H1N1 or H3N2) or Influenza B strain. By delivering the genetic instructions for the viral antigen, the vaccine prompts the host's cells to produce the protein, thereby eliciting a targeted immune response. This mRNA-based approach is intended to offer faster manufacturing timelines and potentially higher efficacy compared to traditional egg-based or cell-based influenza vaccines. mIRV has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials both as a standalone monovalent agent and as a component of Pfizer's broader seasonal influenza vaccine program, which includes bivalent (bIRV) and quadrivalent (qIRV) formulations.
