Overview
Monovalent oral polio vaccine (mOPV) is a live attenuated vaccine that contains only one of the three serotypes of poliovirus. There are three variants: mOPV1 (type 1), mOPV2 (type 2), and mOPV3 (type 3), each protecting against its respective poliovirus serotype. Unlike trivalent OPV (which contains all three serotypes) or bivalent OPV (which contains types 1 and 3), monovalent OPV provides protection against a single specific poliovirus type. This specificity increases the vaccine's effectiveness against the targeted serotype. mOPV is administered orally, which elicits substantial mucosal immunity and is particularly valuable for supplementary immunization activities (SIAs) in polio eradication efforts.
