Overview

Monovalent rLukS-PV is an investigational recombinant protein subunit vaccine component designed to prevent infections caused by *Staphylococcus aureus*. It consists of a detoxified version (toxoid) of the LukS-PV protein, which is one of the two subunits (LukS-PV and LukF-PV) that form the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) toxin. PVL is a pore-forming cytotoxin produced by many strains of *S. aureus*, particularly community-associated methicillin-resistant *S. aureus* (CA-MRSA), and is associated with skin and soft tissue infections as well as necrotizing pneumonia. By inducing antibodies against LukS-PV, the vaccine aims to neutralize the toxin's ability to lyse host immune cells, such as neutrophils. It has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials both as a monovalent formulation and in combination with rAT (recombinant alpha-toxin) by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation and Integrated BioTherapeutics.
