Overview

Monoxerutin (7-monohydroxyethylrutoside) is a semi-synthetic flavonoid and a member of the hydroxyethylrutoside family. It is primarily utilized as a venotonic and vasoprotective agent to alleviate symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency, such as edema, pain, and heavy legs. The drug acts by reducing capillary permeability and increasing capillary resistance, likely through the stabilization of the endothelial cell membrane and the inhibition of neutrophil activation and adherence. Additionally, monoxerutin possesses significant antioxidant properties, scavenging reactive oxygen species and inhibiting lipid peroxidation, which contributes to its protective effects on the microvasculature. It is commonly found as a major constituent in standardized mixtures of hydroxyethylrutosides used in clinical practice.
