montelukast

Montelukast is an oral small molecule drug classified as a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA). It is primarily used to prevent and manage asthma symptoms, including wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and coughing in adults and children. Montelukast is also indicated for the prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction and for the treatment of both seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis when other treatments are not suitable. The drug works by blocking leukotriene D4 at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor in the lungs and bronchial tubes, thereby reducing inflammation, airway constriction, mucus production, and related symptoms. Montelukast was first developed by Merck & Co., with FDA approval granted in 1998 under the brand name Singulair[1][2][5].
