Overview

Montelukast sodium oral thin film is a novel formulation developed by Qilu Pharmaceutical as an alternative to traditional chewable tablets for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis. As a small molecule leukotriene receptor antagonist, it works by blocking the action of cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, LTE4) at the CysLT1 receptor, thereby reducing airway edema, smooth muscle contraction, and inflammatory activity. This oral soluble film (OSF) was designed to improve patient compliance, particularly in pediatric and elderly populations who may have difficulty swallowing tablets. Bioequivalence studies in healthy Chinese volunteers have demonstrated that the 5 mg oral thin film is bioequivalent to the reference chewable tablet (Singulair) under both fasted and fed conditions.
