Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Montelukast VersaFilm is an oral film formulation of montelukast, developed using IntelGenx’s proprietary VersaFilm technology. It is being repurposed for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. The oral film offers advantages over traditional tablet formulations, including improved bioavailability (52% higher than regular tablets), ease of administration (especially for patients with swallowing difficulties), reduced first-pass metabolism, lower dosing requirements, and potentially fewer side effects. Montelukast itself is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks leukotriene D4 at the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor in the lungs and brain, reducing inflammation and bronchoconstriction. In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects in asthma and allergies (its original indications), research suggests montelukast may increase nerve cell progenitor production and cross the blood-brain barrier—features relevant to neurodegenerative disease therapy[2][4][5][8].
