Overview

Monteplase is a recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) developed as a thrombolytic agent for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and thrombosis. It is a genetically engineered mutant of tissue-type plasminogen activator with an extended half-life and reduced binding to plasminogen activator inhibitor compared to alteplase. Monteplase acts by stimulating the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, which then degrades fibrin clots, thereby dissolving thrombi in blood vessels. It can be administered as a single intravenous bolus injection and has been shown in clinical trials to improve outcomes when used prior to percutaneous coronary intervention in acute myocardial infarction[3][4][6].
