Overview
Moonstone Stone Stopper (MSS) is a patented, over-the-counter high-citrate beverage designed to increase urinary pH and citrate levels to prevent the recurrence of kidney stones. Developed by Moonstone Nutrition, it is primarily indicated for patients with calcium, cystine, and uric acid stones who may have difficulty adhering to traditional potassium citrate pill regimens due to gastrointestinal side effects or pill size. The formulation provides approximately 60 mEq of net alkali per daily dose, typically through a combination of citrate salts including potassium, magnesium, and sodium. By alkalinizing the urine, MSS increases the solubility of stone-forming salts like cystine and uric acid and provides citrate to inhibit the crystallization of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate, thereby reducing the risk of stone formation.
