Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mopal-27 is a plant-derived alkaloid isolated from *Loganiaceae* seeds that is being investigated for the treatment of hepatic fibrosis. In preclinical studies, Mopal-27 has been shown to suppress α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) expression in human hepatic stellate cells, thereby inhibiting their activation. In animal models of thioacetamide (TAA)-induced hepatic fibrosis, administration of Mopal-27 attenuated fibrotic pathology, reduced the expression of fibrosis markers (such as α-SMA, vimentin, and collagen type I), and decreased inflammatory responses (including IL-6, TNF-α, and macrophage infiltration). These therapeutic effects are potentially mediated through the induction of fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF-21) expression and the subsequent activation of FGF-21-mediated endocrine signaling pathways.
