Overview

Moricizine is a phenothiazine derivative and class I antiarrhythmic agent, primarily used for the prophylaxis and treatment of serious and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. It was marketed under the brand name Ethmozine. Moricizine acts by inhibiting the rapid inward sodium current across myocardial cell membranes, leading to decreased excitability, slowed conduction velocity, and reduced automaticity in cardiac tissue. This results in normalization of irregular or rapid heartbeats. The drug exhibits properties overlapping class IA, IB, and IC antiarrhythmics but does not fit neatly into any subclass; it is most often classified as a class IC agent. Moricizine was withdrawn from the market in 2007 for commercial reasons[1][3][4][5].
