Morifecidine mesylate (HEC72702) is an orally bioavailable small molecule Hepatitis B virus (HBV) capsid assembly modulator (CAM) being developed by HEC Pharm (Dongguan Chang'an Dongyangguang New Drug Research and Development). It belongs to the class of core protein allosteric modulators (CpAMs) that target the HBV core protein (HBcAg). By binding to the core protein, morifecidine interferes with the proper assembly of the viral capsid, leading to the formation of aberrant, non-functional capsids or preventing the encapsidation of pregenomic RNA (pgRNA). This mechanism effectively inhibits viral replication and reduces the production of new virions. In clinical trials, morifecidine mesylate has been evaluated in combination with ritonavir, which serves as a pharmacokinetic enhancer to increase systemic exposure of the drug.
