Morihepamin

Morihepamin is a specialized amino acid solution developed by Eisai and Ajinomoto (now marketed by EA Pharma) for the supportive treatment of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with chronic liver disorders. The formulation is characterized by a high Fischer's ratio, containing high concentrations of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs)—L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine, and L-Valine—and low concentrations of aromatic amino acids (AAAs). This composition is designed to correct the amino acid imbalance typically seen in liver failure, where BCAA levels are depleted and AAA levels are elevated. By normalizing the plasma amino acid profile, Morihepamin reduces the entry of AAAs into the brain—which are precursors to inhibitory neurotransmitters—and promotes ammonia detoxification in the muscle, thereby alleviating neuropsychiatric symptoms. It is administered as an intravenous infusion.
