Morinda officinalis oligosaccharide is a bioactive compound extracted from the roots of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Morinda officinalis. It is an oral drug approved in China for the treatment of depression. The primary mechanism involves modulation of neurotransmitter systems and anti-inflammatory pathways, including increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression, reversing monoamine neurotransmitter imbalance, and modulating gut microbiota composition. It also acts on the tryptophan–5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)–serotonin metabolic pathway in the gut microbiota by increasing tryptophan hydroxylase levels and inhibiting 5-hydroxytryptophan decarboxylase activity, leading to increased 5-HTP absorption and improved serotonin levels in the brain. Additional mechanisms include suppression of hippocampal inflammation via E2F2-mediated MyD88/PI3K signaling pathways. Besides its antidepressant effects, it has shown potential benefits for sexual dysfunction associated with depression[2][3][5][6].
