Overview

Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the Indian subcontinent and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions. Known as the "tree of life" or "miracle tree," it is valued for its nutritional content and traditional medicinal uses. All parts of the plant—leaves, seeds, pods (drumsticks), roots—are used in food or herbal medicine. Traditionally employed to treat wounds; pain; ulcers; liver disease; heart disease; cancer; inflammation; asthma; diabetes; infections and gastrointestinal disorders[1][3][4][5]. The plant contains over 100 bioactive compounds including alkaloids (e.g., niazimin A&B), flavonoids (e.g., quercetin-3-glucoside), anthraquinones and vitamins[1][4]. Mechanistically: - Polyphenols such as phenolic acids and flavonoids provide antioxidant effects. - Phenolic glycosides from fruit inhibit nitric oxide production for anti-inflammatory action. - Dipeptide/urea derivatives from roots have anti-inflammatory/antinociceptive effects. - Seed extracts show immunosuppressive activity by inhibiting leukocytes/splenocytes/histamine release from mast cells[5]. Preclinical studies support hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), cardioprotective (heart-protecting) and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical evidence exists for blood pressure-lowering and antidiabetic effects but remains insufficient for formal medical recommendations[3].
