morlimidazole

Morlimidazole is a third-generation nitroimidazole antibiotic developed by Hansoh Pharmaceutical. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, including pelvic inflammatory disease and suppurative or gangrenous appendicitis. As a nitroimidazole, morlimidazole acts as a prodrug that is selectively reduced within anaerobic bacterial cells to form reactive intermediates. These intermediates interact with bacterial DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis, which ultimately leads to bacterial cell death. Morlimidazole was designed to offer improved clinical efficacy and a more favorable safety profile compared to earlier nitroimidazoles such as metronidazole and tinidazole. It was approved for marketing in China in 2014.
