Overview

Moroxydine is a synthetic antiviral drug belonging to the class of heterocyclic biguanidines. It was originally developed for the treatment and prevention of influenza but has demonstrated activity against a broad range of DNA and RNA viruses, including herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, and others[1][4][7]. Its mechanism of action is not fully elucidated but appears to involve inhibition of viral RNA synthesis by targeting viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, thereby reducing viral replication[6][8]. Additionally, it may interfere with the virus-host cell system during early stages of infection and cause formation of nonfunctional early proteins that decrease synthesis of viral DNA[7][8]. Moroxydine has been used in pharmaceutical formulations for respiratory infections and remains an experimental agent in clinical research.
