Overview

Morphine is a naturally occurring opiate and potent opioid analgesic derived from the opium poppy. It is primarily used for the relief of moderate to severe acute and chronic pain that requires continuous opioid therapy when other pain medicines are inadequate or not tolerated. Its main mechanism of action is as an agonist at the μ-opioid receptor in the central nervous system; it also acts as an agonist at κ-opioid and δ-opioid receptors. Activation of these receptors leads to analgesia by blocking transmission of nociceptive signals and modulating pain pathways in the spinal cord and brain. Therapeutic effects include analgesia and sedation; side effects can include euphoria or dysphoria depending on dose and context. Chronic use can result in tolerance as well as physical dependence[1][3][4][5][8].
