Overview

Morphine + bupivacaine is a combination medication used for pain management, particularly in spinal anesthesia. This combination leverages the different mechanisms of action of both drugs to provide enhanced analgesia while potentially reducing the required doses of each individual component. Bupivacaine is a potent, long-acting local anesthetic that blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve roots and dorsal root ganglia. Morphine is an opioid that acts through G-protein coupled mu-opioid receptors, closing voltage-gated calcium channels primarily in Rexed's laminae I-II of the spinal cord. When administered intrathecally (into the spinal fluid), this combination provides effective intraoperative pain relief and prolonged postoperative analgesia.
