Overview

**Morphine + bupivacaine** is an intrathecal postoperative analgesic co-administration regimen evaluated by Indiana University in patients undergoing elective laparoscopic colorectal surgery. The protocol administers preservative-free morphine, an opioid analgesic, together with hyperbaric bupivacaine, a long-acting local anesthetic, into cerebrospinal fluid before surgery. Morphine activates mu-opioid receptors to suppress nociceptive transmission, while bupivacaine blocks voltage-gated sodium channels to inhibit neuronal impulse conduction and provide spinal anesthesia and analgesia.
