Morphine hydrochloride is a salt form of the opioid analgesic morphine, used for the management of severe acute and chronic pain when alternative treatments are inadequate. It acts primarily as an agonist at mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, altering pain perception and response by inhibiting nociceptive transmission and modulating pain pathways in the brain and spinal cord. Morphine also has activity at kappa and delta opioid receptors, contributing to its analgesic effects. The drug is derived from opium poppy alkaloids and is available in various formulations including injectable solutions, oral tablets, capsules, and liquids. Its use carries risks of dependence, tolerance, respiratory depression, constipation, nausea, sedation, euphoria or dysphoria; overdose can be fatal due to respiratory depression[1][2][3][4][8]. Morphine hydrochloride is a controlled substance with high abuse potential.
