Morphine hydrochloride is a mu-opioid receptor agonist that typically increases parasympathetic activity, while midazolam is a benzodiazepine that acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor and is known to increase the sympathetic-to-parasympathetic ratio (LF/HF). The trial compared the two drugs to determine if pharmacological premedication could modify the hemodynamic changes following spinal blockade.
