Overview

Morphine sulfate, oxycodone, and oxymorphone are all potent opioid analgesics used for the management of moderate to severe pain. Each acts primarily as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, leading to analgesia, euphoria, and respiratory depression. Morphine is a naturally occurring opiate; oxycodone is a semisynthetic opioid derived from thebaine; and oxymorphone is a semisynthetic derivative of morphine with higher potency and greater lipophilicity than morphine. All three drugs are controlled substances due to their high potential for abuse and dependence. They are indicated for pain severe enough to require daily, around-the-clock opioid treatment when alternative treatments are inadequate[3][4][6][8].
