Overview

Morus alba pollen extract is derived from the pollen of the white mulberry tree and serves as a significant aeroallergen capable of inducing respiratory allergies, including allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. [5, 7] The extract has dual applications in the management of allergies: it is used for diagnostic purposes as well as for therapeutic intervention. [10] For diagnosis, the extract is administered via skin prick tests (SPT) or nasal provocation tests to confirm a patient's sensitivity to the pollen. [2, 8] As a therapeutic agent, it is the active component in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), which can be administered through subcutaneous injections or as a sublingual solution, such as Staloral. [6, 10, 15] This therapeutic approach aims to desensitize the immune system by introducing gradually increasing doses of the allergen, thereby inducing immunological tolerance. This process involves a shift in the immune response, characterized by the production of allergen-specific IgG antibodies and the suppression of IgE-mediated reactions. [10] Research has identified several allergenic proteins within Morus alba pollen, notably methionine synthase (designated Mor a 2), which is considered a major allergen, alongside other proteins like non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTP) and profilin.
