Overview

Moschus is the dried glandular secretion (musk) from the musk sac gland of mature male musk deer, primarily *Moschus moschiferus* (Siberian musk deer) but also related species. Traditionally used in oriental medicine for over 2000 years, particularly in China, it is claimed to treat stroke, coma, neurasthenia, convulsions, heart diseases, ulcerous sores, and other neurological or cardiovascular conditions. The main active ingredient is muscone, a macrocyclic ketone, along with steroids, fatty acids, amino acids, peptides, and proteins. Pharmacological effects attributed (primarily from animal/in vitro data) include anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antioxidant, anticonvulsive, antidepressant, cardiovascular-protective, spasmolytic, and antibacterial actions. Moschus is used in traditional medicines and homeopathy, as well as in perfumes as a scent and fixative. Clinical efficacy and safety data in humans are insufficient and largely anecdotal or based on traditional use; potency and effects may differ depending on animal species and geographic origin of the musk[1][2][3][4][5].
