Motavizumab is a second-generation, ultra-potent humanized monoclonal antibody derived from palivizumab using affinity maturation techniques. It targets the fusion (F) glycoprotein of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), binding to a highly conserved antigenic site A on the F protein with much higher affinity than its predecessor. By binding to this protein, motavizumab inhibits RSV's ability to fuse with and enter host cells, thereby reducing viral replication and preventing infection. Motavizumab was developed for the prevention of serious RSV disease in high-risk pediatric patients but was discontinued for this indication after regulatory setbacks; development continues for other potential RSV treatments[1][3][4][5][7].
