motexafin lutetium

Motexafin lutetium is a second-generation photosensitizer belonging to the metallotexaphyrin class, developed for use in photodynamic therapy (PDT) of cancer and other conditions. It preferentially accumulates in tumor cells due to their increased metabolic rates. Upon activation by far-red light (typically 732 nm), it enters a high-energy state that generates singlet oxygen, leading to local cytotoxic effects and cell death. Motexafin lutetium has been investigated for several indications including solid tumors (as Lutrin), age-related macular degeneration (as Optrin), atherosclerosis, prevention of restenosis, and photoangioplasty. The drug was developed by Jonathan Sessler at the University of Texas at Austin and licensed to Pharmacyclics[1][2][4][6].
