Overview

Mother-to-infant fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and fecal virome transplantation (FVT) are investigational microbiome-based therapies being evaluated in the **RestoreGut** trial. Led by **Professor Klaus Bønnelykke** at the Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood (COPSAC), the treatment aims to correct gut dysbiosis in infants born via cesarean section. C-section infants often lack the maternal vaginal and fecal microbes typically acquired during vaginal birth, which is linked to an increased risk of immune-mediated diseases such as asthma and allergies. The procedure involves transferring processed maternal fecal matter—containing a diverse community of bacteria (FMT) or specifically isolated viruses and phages (FVT)—to the infant shortly after birth to seed a healthy, "vaginal-like" microbiome and promote proper immune system maturation.
