Mouse allergenic extracts are biologic preparations derived from natural sources such as mouse epithelium or urine. They are used for the diagnosis and treatment (immunotherapy) of allergic diseases caused by exposure to mice, including allergic rhinitis and asthma. The mechanism of action involves the induction of an immune response; diagnostically, they provoke a reaction in sensitized individuals via IgE-mediated histamine release from mast cells. For immunotherapy, repeated administration leads to increased production of IgG antibodies and regulatory T cell responses that suppress allergic reactions over time. Mouse epithelial extracts typically contain a mixture of proteins including albumin and small amounts of the major mouse allergen Mus m 1, while urine-derived extracts may have higher concentrations of Mus m 1[1][4][8]. These products are not standardized in the US and their composition can vary depending on source material and manufacturing process[6][8].
