Overview

Mouse nerve growth factor (mNGF) is a neurotrophic factor that plays a crucial role in the development, maintenance, and survival of certain neurons in the nervous system. It's a protein growth factor that has been studied extensively and has clinical applications. Mouse nerve growth factor (mNGF) is a neurotrophic protein that regulates the survival, development, function, and plasticity of sympathetic and sensory neurons in both central and peripheral nervous systems. It is a dimeric protein with two identical polypeptide chains and a molecular weight of approximately 26,500 Da. The biologically active component is the beta subunit (β-NGF)[4][7]. mNGF functions by binding to specific receptors on cell surfaces: the high-affinity tyrosine kinase A (TrkA) receptor and the low-affinity p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). Through these receptors, mNGF activates various signaling pathways including PI3K, Ras, and PLC, which regulate neuronal survival, growth, and differentiation[5][9]. Due to its homology with human NGF, mNGF has been used clinically for treating various neurological conditions. It has been available as a licensed medicine in China since 2003[4]. However, clinical use may be limited by side effects such as injection site hyperalgesia, myalgias, and arthralgias[8]. Recent research has explored mNGF's potential in treating conditions affecting the eye, peripheral neuropathies, and central neurodegenerative diseases. However, studies have also found that mNGF can facilitate the growth of certain tumors, such as interspinal schwannoma, suggesting caution in its clinical application for patients with such conditions[9].
