moxaverine

Moxaverine is a synthetic small molecule vasodilator and a derivative of papaverine. It acts primarily as a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, leading to smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation. Moxaverine also improves the rheological properties of red blood cells, enhancing microcirculatory blood flow. Clinically, it has been used to increase ocular blood flow in conditions such as age-related macular degeneration and primary open angle glaucoma, and has been studied for its effects on ischemia and other vascular disorders[1][4][5]. Its mechanism involves inhibition of phosphodiesterase enzymes, which increases intracellular cyclic nucleotide levels (cAMP/cGMP), resulting in smooth muscle relaxation[1][5]. Moxaverine hydrochloride is marketed under the brand name Kollateral forte.
