Moxidectin is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic and endectocide used in both humans and animals. In humans, it is approved for the treatment of onchocerciasis (river blindness) caused by the parasitic worm Onchocerca volvulus. It works by selectively binding to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels and GABA-A gated chloride channels in the parasite's nerve and muscle cells. This increases membrane permeability to chloride ions, resulting in flaccid paralysis and death of microfilariae but does not kill adult worms. In veterinary medicine, moxidectin is widely used for prevention or control of internal and external parasites such as heartworm in dogs (including as part of combination products), gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle/sheep/horses/dogs/cats/wombats, sarcoptic mange (in combination with imidacloprid), stomach bots in horses, lungworm in cattle/sheep/horses/dogs/cats/wombats[1][2][5][9].
