Overview

moxifloxacin + gatifloxacin refers to the comparative evaluation of two fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotics in a clinical trial conducted by Meir Medical Center. The study was designed as a double-masked, prospective, randomized controlled trial to assess differences in corneal epithelial healing rates and potential epithelial toxicity following pterygium excision surgery. Moxifloxacin (marketed as Vigamox by Alcon) and gatifloxacin (marketed as Zymar by Allergan) are small molecule antibiotics that function by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, thereby preventing bacterial DNA replication and transcription. The trial specifically evaluated these agents as post-operative prophylactic treatments in eyes that had undergone surgery involving the application of Mitomycin C.
