MP4CO is a pegylated human hemoglobin-based carbon monoxide (CO) delivery agent and oxygen therapeutic developed by Sangart Inc. for the treatment of vaso-occlusive crises (VOC) in patients with sickle cell disease. The molecule is designed to deliver therapeutic levels of CO to stabilize hemoglobin S, thereby preventing and reversing the polymerization and sickling of red blood cells. In addition to its gas-carrying capacity, MP4CO exhibits anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-apoptotic properties by modulating pathways such as Heme Oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and NF-κB. It also serves as an oxygen therapeutic, enhancing perfusion and oxygen delivery to ischemic tissues. Clinical development reached Phase 2 for the acute treatment of VOC in sickle cell disease.
