Overview

MPB-1523 is a PEGylated iron oxide nanoparticle-based contrast agent developed for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It is designed to enhance the visualization of tissues and organs rich in reticuloendothelial cells, such as the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. The nanoparticles are modified with polyethylene oxide to improve their biocompatibility and circulation time. After administration, macrophages phagocytose these superparamagnetic iron oxide particles, leading to a reduction in regional MRI signals where normal phagocytic cells are present; tumor tissues lacking these cells retain their signal, creating contrast that aids in distinguishing benign from malignant lesions and detecting lymphatic metastasis. MPB-1523 has completed Phase I clinical trials and Phase II trials for use as an MRI contrast agent in diagnosing liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma), demonstrating high sensitivity and safety without risks associated with heavy metal-based agents like gadolinium. Additionally, preclinical studies suggest it may serve as a long-term iron supplement monitored by MR imaging for conditions such as iron deficiency anemia in chronic kidney disease[1][2][5][8].
