MQPD is a novel quinone-dopamine hybrid molecule designed for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. It structurally integrates a dopamine moiety with a quinone fragment analogous to coenzyme Q to provide a dual-action therapeutic approach: replenishing dopamine levels and providing neuroprotection through antioxidant activity. Preclinical evaluations indicate that MQPD effectively scavenges reactive oxygen species and protects neuronal cultures from mitochondrial toxins such as rotenone and paraquat. Despite low direct brain bioavailability, MQPD administration results in a sustained increase in striatal dopamine levels for up to four days, suggesting a long-acting mechanism that may offer advantages over current standard-of-care treatments like L-DOPA.
