Overview

MRC202 is a micellar formulation of paclitaxel developed by MRC Biotech Pty Ltd for the treatment of malignant ascites and peritoneal cancer. Paclitaxel, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, is a taxane that functions as a microtubule stabilizer. It binds to the beta-subunit of tubulin, promoting the assembly of microtubules and preventing their depolymerization. This stabilization inhibits the normal dynamic reorganization of the microtubule network required for mitosis and other cellular functions, leading to cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and subsequent apoptosis. MRC202 is specifically designed for intraperitoneal administration, which aims to achieve high local concentrations of paclitaxel within the peritoneal cavity to treat localized malignancies while reducing systemic exposure and associated toxicities. This approach is particularly relevant for patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis and refractory malignant ascites who have failed standard systemic therapies.
