Overview

mRNA-1012.1 is a next-generation seasonal influenza vaccine candidate developed by Moderna. It utilizes messenger RNA (mRNA) technology encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to encode for the hemagglutinin (HA) proteins of specific influenza A and B strains. As a next-generation candidate, mRNA-1012.1 is designed to potentially offer enhanced immunogenicity or broader protection compared to traditional egg-based vaccines or Moderna's first-generation mRNA influenza vaccine, mRNA-1010. The vaccine is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (e.g., NCT06197035) to assess its safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity in healthy adults, particularly those aged 50 to 75 years.
