mRNA-1020 is an investigational messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine candidate developed by Moderna in collaboration with AstraZeneca for the prevention of seasonal influenza. As part of a strategic alliance to discover and develop mRNA respiratory vaccines, mRNA-1020 is designed to encode for both hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) proteins from multiple influenza A and B strains. By including mRNA for the more conserved NA protein in addition to the HA protein, the vaccine aims to elicit a broader immune response and potentially offer improved protection against circulating influenza viruses compared to traditional vaccines. The candidate is formulated using lipid nanoparticles for delivery and is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity in healthy adults.
