mRNA-1189 is an investigational prophylactic vaccine developed by Moderna for the prevention of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and infectious mononucleosis. It consists of a lipid nanoparticle encapsulating four messenger RNAs encoding the EBV envelope glycoproteins gp42, gp220, gH, and gL. These proteins mediate viral entry into B-cells and epithelial cells—the primary targets of EBV infection—by being expressed in their native membrane-bound form to elicit an immune response. The vaccine is designed to stimulate the immune system against EBV and prevent associated diseases such as infectious mononucleosis. As of March 2024, mRNA-1189 has completed Phase 1 trials and is advancing toward pivotal Phase 3 studies[1][3][5][8].
