mRNA-1195 is an investigational mRNA-based vaccine developed by **Moderna**, specifically designed to target the **Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)**. EBV is a ubiquitous herpesvirus that has been strongly linked to the pathogenesis of **Multiple Sclerosis (MS)**, with evidence suggesting it may be a necessary trigger for the disease. mRNA-1195 aims to induce a robust immune response against EBV antigens, potentially preventing the onset of MS or modifying the disease course in affected individuals. The vaccine utilizes Moderna's proprietary **lipid nanoparticle (LNP)** technology to deliver mRNA encoding four EBV glycoproteins (gp350, gH, gL, and gp42), which are involved in viral entry into B cells and epithelial cells. As of 2024, mRNA-1195 is being evaluated in **Phase 2** clinical trials for MS and **Phase 1** trials in healthy participants.
