mRNA-1215 is an experimental pan-betacoronavirus vaccine candidate developed through a collaboration between the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center and Moderna. Utilizing messenger RNA (mRNA) technology encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the vaccine is designed to provide broad-spectrum protection against a variety of viruses within the *Betacoronavirus* genus, including SARS-CoV-1, SARS-CoV-2, and MERS-CoV. The vaccine works by delivering genetic instructions to host cells to produce a stabilized version of the viral spike protein, which subsequently triggers the production of neutralizing antibodies and activates T-cell mediated immunity. Unlike strain-specific COVID-19 vaccines, mRNA-1215 targets conserved epitopes across multiple lineages to mitigate the impact of viral evolution and potential future zoonotic spillovers. It is currently undergoing Phase 1 clinical evaluation to determine its safety profile and immunogenic potential in healthy adult populations.
