mRNA-1273.167 is an investigational, variant-matched mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna for the prevention of COVID-19. As an update to the mRNA-1273 (Spikevax) platform, it utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver messenger RNA encoding a specific variant of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein—specifically targeting the JN.1 lineage. Once injected intramuscularly, host cells translate the mRNA into the spike protein, which then stimulates the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses. This formulation is currently being evaluated in Phase 3b/4 clinical trials (e.g., NCT06585241) to assess its safety and immunogenicity in previously vaccinated individuals against circulating and emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.
