Drug intelligence / Profile preview
mRNA-1273.214 is a bivalent mRNA-based vaccine developed by Moderna for the prevention of COVID-19. It is composed of two messenger RNA (mRNA) sequences: one encoding the spike protein of the original SARS-CoV-2 strain (Wuhan-Hu-1) and another encoding the spike protein of the Omicron BA.1 variant. These mRNAs are encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to facilitate delivery into host cells, where they are translated into viral proteins that trigger an immune response. mRNA-1273.214 was the first bivalent COVID-19 booster to receive regulatory authorization, providing enhanced protection against the Omicron variant compared to the original monovalent vaccine. While it has been utilized as a comparator in clinical trials for multi-component vaccines targeting influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), such as mRNA-1230, mRNA-1273.214 itself is exclusively a COVID-19 vaccine and does not contain antigens for other respiratory pathogens.
