mRNA-1273.251 is a variant-specific mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna for the prevention of COVID-19. As part of the mRNA-1273 platform, it consists of a synthetic messenger RNA sequence encoding the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoprotein, stabilized in the prefusion conformation. The mRNA is encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) composed of SM-102, cholesterol, DSPC, and PEG2000-DMG to facilitate delivery into host cells. Once administered, the mRNA is translated by the host's cellular machinery to produce the spike protein, triggering an immune response. mRNA-1273.251 is specifically designed to target emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants and is being evaluated in clinical trials to assess its immunogenicity and safety as a booster in previously vaccinated individuals.
