Overview

mRNA-1273.815 is a monovalent messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine developed by Moderna, specifically engineered to target the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5. It was developed as part of the 2023-2024 seasonal COVID-19 vaccine update to address the dominance of XBB-lineage variants. The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver mRNA encoding the prefusion-stabilized spike protein of the XBB.1.5 variant. Upon administration, host cells translate the mRNA into the viral antigen, which triggers a targeted immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and the activation of T cells. mRNA-1273.815 has been evaluated in Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials for safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity in adults and pediatric populations as young as 6 months.
