mRNA-1602 is an experimental monovalent mRNA-based vaccine candidate developed by Moderna for the prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. It consists of a single messenger RNA sequence encapsulated within lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) that encodes the CMV glycoprotein B (gB), a major surface protein essential for viral entry into host cells. Upon administration, the mRNA is translated by host cells into the gB protein, which then triggers the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies and activate T-cell responses against the virus. mRNA-1602 was the first mRNA vaccine for CMV to enter clinical trials, demonstrating safety and immunogenicity in Phase 1 studies. However, Moderna has since prioritized the development of mRNA-1647, a more comprehensive hexavalent vaccine that includes mRNA for both gB and the CMV pentameric complex, leading to the discontinuation of mRNA-1602 as a standalone product.
