Overview

mRNA-1608 is a therapeutic mRNA vaccine candidate developed by Moderna for herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) infections. It aims to induce strong antibody responses with neutralizing and effector functionality combined with cell-mediated immunity. The vaccine is designed to potentially provide cross-protection against HSV-1 as well. In rhesus macaques, the trivalent mRNA-1608 vaccine induced neutralizing antibodies blocking gC2 and gE2 immune evasion and stimulated CD4 T cell responses. As an mRNA vaccine, it leverages Moderna's messenger RNA technology platform, which offers potential advantages in efficacy, speed of development, and production scalability.
