mRNA-1893 is an investigational mRNA-based vaccine developed for the prevention of Zika virus infection. It contains a messenger RNA sequence encoding the structural proteins of the Zika virus, which, when delivered into human cells, directs them to produce viral proteins that assemble into virus-like particles. This mimics natural infection and stimulates an immune response, including production of neutralizing antibodies against Zika virus. Preclinical studies have shown that mRNA-1893 can protect animals from Zika infection and transmission during pregnancy. The vaccine is being developed by Moderna in collaboration with BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority) and has reached Phase 2 clinical trials for prevention of Zika virus infection in healthy adults[1][2][3][4][5][6].
